The Black Monk by: Wendy Kesselman Directed by: Kevin Newbury The Beckett Theatre Presented by Rhoda Herrick and South Ark Stage Scenic Design: Charlie Corcoran Costumes: Jessica Jahn Lighting: D.M. Wood 2008 “the stage set by Charlie Corcoran looks a bit like an illustration in a child's pop-up book of stories. The curving planks that suggest the swell of a raging river and the toy-like furniture and props all contribute to the dreamy quality of the music and the surreal nature of the story.” “To round out the pluses, director Kevin Newbury and his creative team have staged the story simply but quite effectively, with a curving stage floor that allows for a raised walkway and evocative glimpse of fields and a river.” “Charlie Corcoran's set is nicely conceived; the stage floor curves up several feet at the back to support a walkway on which hints of a wheat field are sometimes displayed.” “The taupe and grey colored set by Charlie Corcoran is wonderful and evocative of the many different scenes in this intermission less, interminable chamber piece. Its a pity that the score is not as intriguing or as interesting as the set. Or the story for that matter.” “I did enjoy Charlie Corcoran's set which was reminiscent of a fairy tale incased inside a music hall.”
