Rock Doves by Marie Jones Directed by: Ian McElhinney Irish Arts Center http://www.irishartscenter.org/ Scenic Design: Charlie Corcoran Costumes: Chris Rumery Lights: Daniel Meeker 2007 The first striking thing about Rock Doves, now playing at the exquisite Irish Arts Center in far west Hell's Kitchen, is the terrifically filthy set design from Charles Corcoran that immediately makes you feel like you need a shower—it's set in a squatter's abode in an otherwise abandoned apartment littered with candle wax, hand-me down furniture, and pigeon droppings. The smashed windows have been boarded up in designer Charlie Corcoran's evocative set. The only furnishings are a single mattress on the floor, a well-worn easy chair, a crate, an armoire and a TV set with no wires or plug. The mottled walls are as much the victim of a coat of hideous blue paint as they are the result of neglect and "the troubles."
a squalid one room apartment in a lousy section of post-troubles Belfast. Rock Doves captures a seminal moment in time with breathtaking urgency.
