“Transforming the black box theater of Luna Stage into an evocative replica of Memphis’s Lorraine Motel, circa 1968, was challenge enough for Charlie Corcoran, who designed the sets for “The Man in Room 306.” But by engineering an entrance to the stands surrounding the stage that requires each ticket holder to step onto the infamous motel balcony before entering the room itself, Mr. Corcoran and Cheryl Katz, the director, have challenged the audience to confront viscerally one of the most tragic moments in our country’s history: the assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on April 4, 1968.”

“It was impressive then, and even better now in Luna's new digs.
Charlie Corcoran is one reason why. He has designed not just the antiseptic, cookie-cutter interior of Room 306 of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tenn., but the cinder-block exterior, too. This way, theatergoers get the sense that King allowed himself only the most modest accommodation budget, and that he preferred to spend his money for more productive ends.”

"His life, as he takes stock, has become a series of hotel rooms like this one, with its overflowing ashtray, plate of cold food and, for company, the telephone, radio and television. (Charlie Corcoran’s meticulously realistic set comes complete with that infamous balcony, through which the audience enters, and a Lorraine sign visible beyond the curtains.)"
